Journal of Beat Studies
Volume 5, Spring  2021

NEW YORK CITY April 17, 2017 – The fifth volume of the Journal of Beat Studies honors Ann Charters, emerita professor of English at UConn-Storrs, the first president of the Beat Studies Association, and the founder of the field of Beat Studies. Volume 5 features a new interview with Charters, the republication of her famed Jack Kerouac: A Bibliography (1967, 1975), never-before-published letters about the bibliography and her 1966 visit with Kerouac to review his archives, as well as testimonials from scholars, an essay on her Herman Melville/Charles Olson research, and photographs by and of Charters and other Beat writers.

In her testimonial to Charters, Jane Falk writes: “As I browse my bookshelves, I could continue to add titles Charters has authored or edited. However, an even more significant aspect of her dedication to Beat scholarship is her mentoring of other researchers. I remember a number of years ago, early in my immersion in the Beats, her willingness to meet with me and share her expertise. Such generosity embodies a spirit of camaraderie which permeates Beat Studies.”

The Journal of Beat Studies is devoted exclusively to the scholarly criticism of Beat generation writing and writers. Its mandate is to provide readers with intelligent and penetrating criticism across the range of Beat writing, including fiction, poetry, drama, autobiography, life writing, travel writing, and screenplay writing. The ultimate goal of the journal is to advance the quality of Beat Studies scholarship through application of diverse critical perspectives that address Beat production as both complex art and cultural critique.
