NEW YORK CITY March 31, 2017 – Pace University Press explores everything from female subjectivity in Mrs. Dalloway to the connections between Virginia Woolf and Charles Darwin in its twenty-third volume of the Woolf Studies Annual (Ed. Mark Hussey). Included among the articles are: “Empire and Commerce in Latin America: Historicizing Woolf’s The Voyage Out” by Patricia Novillo-Corvalán, “Textbook Greek: Thoby Stephen in Jacob’s Room” by Amanda Golden, and “Hearing the World ‘in Full Orchestra’: Voyaging Out with Woolf, Darwin, and Music,” by Claire Davison. Several book reviews are also featured, including Jane Goldman’s review of Queer Bloomsbury, edited by Brenda Helt and Madelyn Detloff (Edinburgh University Press).

In her discussion of the “longstanding critical assumption” that Woolf knew little about South America while writing The Voyage Out, author Novillo-Corvalán argues, “by critically positioning The Voyage Out within the political-economic history of early twentieth-century Latin America, it is possible to reconceive the novel as an aesthetic platform for a scathing critique of an emergent global capitalist modernity.”

Woolf Studies Annual began publication in 1995 and is a refereed journal publishing substantial new scholarship on the work of Virginia Woolf and her milieu. Each volume includes several articles, reviews of new books, and an up-to-date guide to library special collections of interest to researchers. The Annual also occasionally features edited transcriptions of previously unpublished manuscripts.
