Volume 5, Fall 2020

NEW YORK, NY – Pace University Press is proud to announce the release of The Journal of Comics and Culture, Volume 5.

This volume of the peer-reviewed journal is guest-edited by Jean-Paul Gabilliet, a French professor of American Studies at the Université Bordeaux, and explores the Franco-American history of comics, analyzing French comics in America and American comics in France.

Articles include:

“From Marvel to Strange. Publishing Marvel Comics in France (1969-1996): Between Importation and Autonomy” by Jean- Matthieu Méon discusses how the de-Americanization of these comics was a young historian’s Indiana Jones-like foray into popular culture.

“’The Illustrated Fantasy Magazine from France.’ From Métal Hurlant to Heavy Metal” by Nicolas Labarre explores the radical departure from publishing practices in the U.S.
